Alkagesta met Singapore Management University students interested in shipping and commodities at Industry Networking Night 2026 on 15 October, according to a company announcement. The event was organised by the Maritime Merchants Society with support from ITI@SMU. Alkagesta presented its participation as an opportunity to discuss industry careers directly with students and strengthen its engagement with potential local talent.
The company was represented by Agshin Bakirzade, Commodity Trading Director, APAC, and Afiq Salim, Senior Marine Fuel Trader. Students raised questions about routes into trading, operations and trade finance. According to Alkagesta, its representatives explained the practical aspects of daily work in marine fuels, giving attendees an account of the business from staff working in commodity trading and fuel markets.
The announcement placed the student discussions in the context of Singapore’s role in the sector, describing the city-state as the world’s largest marine fuels hub. Alkagesta said meetings of this kind help students understand the opportunities available in the industry. Its account emphasised engagement with young people already curious about shipping and commodities, alongside the discussion of specific career paths and working responsibilities.
Alkagesta also highlighted Singapore’s importance to the development of Alkagesta Asia, which it said reached approximately 250,000 metric tonnes a month during its first complete year of operations. The company linked the expansion of its Singapore hub to the need to attract and develop local staff, describing that work as part of establishing a durable presence in the market.
University engagement was also linked to the company’s ESG Framework and its stated commitment to people and communities. Alkagesta said a record first half of 2026 had generated demand for additional skills in trading, operations and finance, connecting its student outreach with the staffing requirements of its growing business.
